A day in Nida Lithuania

Nida Lithuania is a quaint town on the Curonian Spit and also the western most point of Lithuania.

To get to Nida we first had to take a bus ride to a ferry station about fifteen minutes away from LCC. Next, we boarded the shortest ferry ride I have ever taken, the duration of which was about four minutes across a half mile wide strip of water. (As you can see the Curonian Spit is not quite connected to Lithuania.) We then drove another hour and a half to the town on the sea, Nida. We were welcomed to Nida by a cold and rainy Lithuanian day. I was not enthusiastic about this because I decided to wear shoes made of cloth instead of something more water resistant. Despite the rain, we trudged onward through the town and to an old, quaint, and peaceful Lutheran church.

We were supposed to go inside, but the door was locked. This was disappointing on a few levels. The first was disappointment that I couldn't get out of the rain, and the second was because I love old churches! So with no further delay we walked toward the Parnidis Dune. After dodging many puddles on a gravel and mud path, as well as climbing 180 steps, we arrived a top the dune. Now let me tell you, this was the biggest dune I have ever seen! This dune is 170 feet tall and overlooks the Baltic Sea and the town of Nida, here are some pictures...

You can see Russia in this picture. It is the distant strip of land you can see across the water

After our sand dune experience we decended in the incessant rain back to our bus. I ended the day wityh a shopping trip with my roommate and a movie night with friends. I'm pretty tired after all that! The cold rain really takes the energy out of you!
